My roommate has been watching EV review videos for several years. I figured, my Ford Focus was over 20 years old and getting tired, so I looked over basically all the possible EVs carefully before dropping a wad on one.
I wanted good range (well over 200miles) at a reachable price, but the thing that guided my choice was: what part of this vehicle will matter the most to me? Obviously, the part in front of my face while I am using it.
Mustang looked like a good price, but that enormous screen hanging off the dash knocked it out of contention. The Jaguar has a lovely interior, but its price was not acceptable. After due consideration, the Ariya offers a nice interior, good range (in the + models) and a name that I consider the mark of reliable.
The first thing I fell in love with upon driving home in it is the 2-spoke steering wheel. I have a habit of using the bottom of the wheel, so this is perfect. The first thing I turned off was the courteous driver's seat that slides back when you get in. Sorry, I very much do not need that. But, when it is in place, it is the most comfortable seat one could hope for (but, fortunately, not nap-inducing). And, of course, the electric slide armrest – why?
There are a few annoyances, but no big deal-breakers. I do worry about all the things that can fail, but maybe I will be dirt-napping by the time the car gets troublesome. On balance, Inga (I named her for a character from Young Frankenstein as the actor who played her passed on shortly after I bought the car) makes me happy.
I have taken to using Sport mode most of the time, and, given that I am not a leadfoot, it seems to actually get me better efficiency than Eco mode, mostly because I get good regen on downhills. Driving modes seem like a silly idea to me; there has to be a better way.
